Hot Tip Tuesday : Episode 5

How Scalp Health Can Effect Hair Health

Many people have some sort of routine when it comes to their hair, whether it’s an extensive routine, or just a simple wash & go. What many people aren’t thinking about is the way the scalp plays such a huge part in your hair’s health. I mean it is where the hair is growing from but it is much more than that. The scalp is the foundation for all things growth and production when it comes to healthy hair.

What is the cause?

The best way to start to take care of a problem is to get to the root of it (I couldn’t help myself). The biggest problems people encounter are feeling like their hair is weighed down or even things like dandruff, dead skin, or product build up. In fact, most hair problems are a result of a scalp problem first, whether it be greasy hair that you have to wash every day or experiencing hair loss. All of the above are from an overproduction of sebum and can cause the hair follicles to become irritated which can result in dryness, potential hair loss, and breakage.

How to fix it!

One thing to be conscious of is the products you are using in your hair. Some things to avoid are sulfates, parabens, certain alcohols, and silicones. These ingredients can cause dryness, breakage, skin irritation, and damage. In addition, it is important to find the right balance in a wash cycle for your hair. Washing too often can strip the hair’s natural oils and cause dryness and flaking. Not washing enough can cause product build up and irritation. Massaging the scalp is also a necessity in scalp care (and lets be real, it feels amazing). Regular scalp massages help with blood circulation, in turn, helping with hair growth. In-salon services, like scalp treatments work wonders for the hair and scalp, unclogging the hair follicle and providing nutrients to the scalp.
